January's Coffee: Karindundu AB
Cupping Notes: Red Currant, Honey, Cocoa
Degree of Roast: Medium
Process: Washed
Varietal: Batian, SL28, SL34, Ruiru 11
Altitude: 5,800
Origin: Kenya, NyeriRegion, Karindundu Mill
January’s coffee of the month is from the Karindundu mill in Kenya’s Nyeri district. This factory is in the lowland region of Mt. Kenya, close to the town of Karatina where 513 active members contribute to annual production. Farmers grow macadamia, banana, maize, and beans near their coffee, a method known as intercropping and the inspiration for our label. After harvesting their coffee, farmers deliver it to Karindundu where the ripe cherries are de-pulped, fermented overnight, washed, and then placed on raised beds to dry.
In Kenya, most farmers own small plots between ⅛ to ¼ of a hectare. Producers rely on factories to process and sell their coffee. Once farmers deliver their cherries to the factory, they are mixed with other producers' coffee after it is weighed and sorted. Because of this, coffee is usually traceable down to the factory or mill level instead of the specific farmer.
The Nyeri region where this coffee is from is located between Mt. Kenya and the Aberadare Mountains, a perfect geographic and climactic area for coffee production. We are picking up on notes of red currant, cocoa and honey. Hope you enjoy and Happy Brewing!

Anacafe-14
The Anacafe-14 is a lesser known coffee varietal developed in Guatemala by the Guatemalan National Coffee Board. The objective was to create a coffee that does well at lower elevations. Pablo realized that the coffee does very well at his farm's 5,000+ft altitude and we both agree it cups exceptionally well.
This is a Naturally processed Anacafe-14. When the lot is in full production by next year we're expecting some great coffees in volume. I don't think it's an understatement to say that this might be the best or at least one of the best Anacafe-14s on the market right now.

Grano Grandioso
The Pacamara is known in Guatemala as the "grano grandioso" because it is a very large coffee bean. This coffee comes from Pablo and Eva's coffee farm. It is also naturally processed.
The Pacamara can be a bit tricky to roast because of it's size. It acts like a normal coffee, but getting a balanced roast throughout the bean can be a challenge because of its size. In addition to growing some more exotic varietals, Pablo and Eva have become experts in post harvest processing. This value adding step has enabled them to win awards in coffee cultivation and processing including a 3rd place in the Guatemala cup of excellence in 2024.

Natural Caturra
The Caturra may not be as exotic as an Anacafe-14 or a Pacamara, but it's still a great coffee. I like to think of a true caturra as a "legacy" varietal in the sense that it's a quality coffee that's been around for a while.
I've met farmers who take tremendous pride in growing more traditional varietals of coffee. These coffees do not have the built in resistance to disease that the Anacafe-14, Castillo and others have in their genetics. Still, under the watchful eye of attentive farmers these coffees can grow strong and healthily and have a great harvest even in the face of modern challenges.

Who do we partner with?
Tug Hill Artisan Roasters sources coffee both through importers as well as directly from farms. We really value these "direct trade" relationships. So much so that we've set up a whole page on our website where we talk about them!
Whether the farmers are practicing new and innovate pest control or fermenting coffee with unique yeast strains, we want to share and emphasize some of the wonderful people we've had the opportunity to work with over the years.
At Tug Hill Artisan Roasters, we recognize that the best we can do as roasters is being true to the intent of the farmers and processors. It's the knowhow to grow great coffee and hours put into its processing that sets specialty apart (obviously there's also the scoring). Let's put credit due where it deserves to be.
