The Huehuetenengo region of Guatemala is known for some of the best coffees in the world. We love this one and it’s been a work horse of our listings now for a few years. The Conductor has a nice full body with a touch of cherry and raisin. It’s well balanced and very flavorful. It’s the perfect coffee for someone wanting a coffee a little darker than a typical medium, but still has the complexity of a medium roast.
The Conductor is named after Horatio Huff, who was a conductor on the underground railway. The Black River Valley was a major route for run-away slaves seeking a path to Canada. It’s not uncommon today for older houses in the area to have secret rooms or underground passages between buildings.
Horatio was a “Conductor” on the underground railway. On his property there was a cave with a body of water inside. Horatio would hide run-away slaves by paddling them to the far side of the pond in the cave. Today there’s a historical landmark on route 26 near the cafe.
As we explore the history and makeup of our communities it's fun to find gems like Horatio Hough. Hopefully this coffee will contribute to his living legacy.
