Sometimes you just stumble into a good thing. Alex and I first met in Guatemala in 2023. When Noah and I visited Honduras in November of 2024 we wanted to meet up, perhaps purchase a micro lot or two and call it good. Alex, however, is a passionate individual. After meeting in Marcala we drove for an hour on muddy roads to his farm. It was dark when we arrived and to be fair, neither Noah nor I had any idea where we were. The next day we took a walk around the farm. Alex plants many different types of coffees and he's also an expert at processing them.
Later I discovered that Alex is a fantastic coffee taster. He has competed in Honduran National Competitions and done very well.
In my purchasing experience in Central America, I've noticed that often there is a bit of a dichotomy between coffee producers, roasters and baristas. Alex is representative of a new generation of coffee farmers who are aware of what specialty coffee is interested in and capable of occupying and feeling comfortable at different spots along the supply chain. Alex can not only grow a healthy plant, but has a clear understanding how what the end consumer is looking for in their cup. He's also just an all round great guy. We look forward to sharing some baleadas and cupping some great coffees later on this winter.
