For third generation coffee farmer, Armando Rodgriguez, coffee is a way of life. During our trip to Honduras in March, Armando told us about his decision to take over the farm from his father. He explained that he had always wanted to grow great coffee, but faced many obstacles. One of those obstacles was a lack of access to information. Armando applied for a scholarship to learn about coffee horticulture and won. After completing his degree he was able to return to the family farm and implement modern horticultural techniques that battle coffee leaf rust fungus and make the farm more resilient through diversification.
This is our 3 year working with Fina la Moradita and every year we’ve doubled our purchasing as these coffees have found quite a following. Coffee has been an extremely volatile commodity since the pandemic. In 2024-2026 we’ve seen the commodity coffee price fluctuate from $4.24 - $2.75 / lb. It takes three years for a coffee producer to get a sapling to produce a harvest. Day to day price volatility can completely disrupt long term plans. When we negotiate directly with coffee producers we’re able to come up with pricing that benefits everyone. Development of great coffees needs long term price stability.
Armando’s farm “Finca Moradita” is located outside the town of “San Agustin”, Honduras. Something or someone from San Agustin is called a “San Agustineco” or “Tineco” for short. Armando says that coffee is the Pride of Tineco.
