Finca la Morradita is named after the purple flower that Armando grows throughout the farm. When Noah, Vanessa and I first visited his farm in early spring 2023 we were really blown away by Armando’s care and vision for the land his family has farmed for generations. In addition to coffee, Armando grows fruits, vegetables, grazes cattle, and there’s even a tilapia farm. Armando knows what level of shade is needed at different altitudes for optimal coffee growth. Whenever he cuts a tree down, new trees get planted that offer the exact amount of shade that his coffee under growth needs. Seeing a coffee farm based on permaculture values is a breath of fresh air (pun intended).
Armando told Noah and me about a lot he has way up on the top of the ridge where he grows the “Yellow Colombia” varietal. We were excited to hear this and decided to try to help Armando build some coffee driers (think greenhouse).
Then came the 2024-25 harvest. The rains never let up. A lot of the coffee even started to rot on the trees. Roads were washed out and horses were needed to bring the coffee down from the mountains. Without the new green houses, we wouldn’t have this naturally processed coffee; it would have just rotted. We’re excited about partnerships like this. This is a good coffee with sweet notes of chocolate and red fruit. If the climate cooperates next year, it’ll be stellar.
