The Kiambu Peaberry is a very nice Kenyan coffee. It’s a washed coffee and the flavor exemplifies the varietal and terroir of a higher end Kenyan coffee. The coffee is grown on a 105 hectare estate near the village of Kiambu. The soil in this area is a reddish-brown loam known as the “kikuyu loam”. This and the SL-28 and SL-34 varietals contribute to the unique “sundried tomato” profile.
The Ibonia Estate, located at 5600 ft above sea level, hires roughly 200 people from the surrounding area to help farm and process 180 tons of coffee each year.
Peaberries are round coffee beans. They’re not a defect or a result of specific genetics, but simply what comes about when only one of the two ovules is pollinated. They look different and require a slightly different approach to roasting, but beyond that it’s a normal coffee.
In addition to “sundried tomato” we’re picking up on sweet vanilla and a bit of a tangerine citrus. This coffee comes to us via Balzac Brothers Coffee Importers in Charleston, SC.This washed coffee is a delightful option to kick off our summer! Enjoy!
